Dili in Ruins - After the Rampage

With independence from Indonesia a reality, East Timor faced a new hardship: rebuilding its country after 90 percent of the small nation was destroyed by pro-Indonesia forces.  Following East Timor's overwhelming vote for independence in August 1999, rampaging militia massacred more than 1,000 people.  Six months later, many East Timorese began the difficult task of reconstructing their homes, schools and churches.  UN forces rounded us suspected militia and put them in a temporary jail until trial in a yet-to-be-created judicial system.

Leaving only a shell of a home, pro Indonesian militia destroyed nearly 95% of the capital Dili while ransacking East Timor, leaving thousands to rebuild their lives.

We Hate Capitalism - photo by John Stanmeyer

With overseas Timorese returning to independent East Timor, many fear exploitation by some who will look to benefit while trying to rebuild their ravaged country.
