The U.S. Air Force
Honor Guard escorts the remains of former Air Force Reserve Major
General Howard W. Cannon, during his funeral at Arlington National
Cemetery, Virginia on April 10. Cannon once survived 42 days
behind enemy lines in 1944, after his plane was shot down over Holland
during the Allied invasion of Europe in World War II. He received
a Purple Heart, Presidential Citation and French Legion of Honor for his
heroism. Cannon was 90 years old at the time of his death.
He was elected to the United States Senate in Nevada in 1958, a position
he held for 24 years.
